Challenge

Oliver Wyman Supply Chain helps clients optimize inventory levels and logistics. For this, the consultancy developed software that enables process automation through time-series forecasting. In one of their client projects, the larger the company’s dataset grew, the slower the process became. To overcome this challenge, Oliver Wyman approached MVP Match to find specific expertise to augment their solutions team with someone who brings a highly specialized skill set. Moreover, there were budget and time constraints.

Our approach

After a briefing with Oliver Wyman, MVP Match tapped into its senior talent network and proposed a data engineer with the matching skill set in less than 24 hours. This expert created immediate impact, and after just 5 days, the solutions team was able to make significant progress. Augmenting the team with very specific external expertise was a tipping point for Oliver Wyman. By adjusting the software package from running on a single- to a multicore processor and implementing an additional compiler in the data processing, Match’s data engineer was able to accelerate the processing time drastically. Oliver Wyman expected this phase of the project to last roughly 4 weeks, however he implemented the changes in a week.

Results

The impact of this team augmentation solution from MVP Match’s was tremendous for Oliver Wyman. Data handling that had previously taken more than an hour could now be processed in less than 15 minutes, resulting in 20 times faster processing speed. This increase in performance not only accelerated Oliver Wyman’s operating efficiency, but also greatly reduced cost internally as well as for their clients. Match’s data engineer further improved the software package by boosting its test coverage to almost 100%. He eventually handed over a detailed and well-documented report that enabled a transparent knowledge transfer to the internal team and prevented future bottlenecks.
