heycar is a leading European marketplace for high quality used car sales. Their digital platform offers consumers a holistic car buying experience by integrating offers from strategic partners, including dealerships, financing companies, and insurance providers.

Challenge

After great success in Germany and the UK, heycar was ready to expand to new markets. They wanted to build a blueprint platform for future market rollouts, starting with Spain. At the time, heycar was in the process of centralizing their platforms and needed to ensure that business-as-usual was not affected by rollouts. Complicating this work was that Spain was in the middle of a strict COVID lockdown. The Spanish leadership team had only met online, and all planning had to be done remotely. Heycar reached out to MVP Match as remote work experts to build a cross-functional team to help them overcome their challenges.

Our approach

MVP Match had partnered with heycar on multiple projects before and understood the company’s product and culture well. Hence, Match plugged in smoothly and worked closely with internal stakeholders and BCG Digital Ventures (who initially built the heycar platform). Within two weeks, Match was able to identify a stellar cross-functional team of engineers, product managers, designers, and localized marketing experts, fully screened and ready to get started.

Results

With the managed team, heycar was able to successfully build and launch the platform in Spain within 5 months, according to timeline and within budget. Match was able to sped up the hiring process by 80%, as setting up this team with perm hires would have taken 3+ months. Both the platform and the process of building interim execution squads served as a blueprint for future rollouts. Using this managed team approach, heycar was able to internationalize quickly, while ensuring that business-as-usual could continue without disruption.
